Klout is a social media analytics service, already well know in the tech zones for its Klout Score that measures users’ popularity/ influence on twitter. With social media and Facebook increasingly getting synonymous, it comes with no wonder that Klout has recently extended its service to measure a user’s popularity on Facebook.

Every individual who creates content online has influence. Klout aims at accurately measuring that influence and empowering users to better understand and leverage that influence. Klout’s already existing twitter analytics platform considers metrics such as retweets, @ Mention counts, list counts, list follower counts etc. to measure the influence of a tweeter. Through its new Facebook analytics platform, Klout pulls user parameters like comments, likes, and data from friendship network to measure the user influence. Here’s a detailed methodology on how the Klout Score is calculated.

Put in Klout’s own words, “The Klout score is highly correlated to clicks, comments and retweets. The final Klout Score is a representation of how successful a person is at engaging their audience and how big of an impact their messages have on people.”

The Klout score measures its key metrics namely, True Reach, Amplification probability, and Network Influence for every user. Here’s what Klout had to say about Phoenix Suns, an independent twitter account maintained by fans for fans.

Since its launch in 2008, Klout garnered over 250,000 users and over 300 API partners, including Cotweet, Hootsuite, Tap 11, Live Intent, PostUp among others. In April 2010, Klout secured US$ 1.5 million in series A funding from Mayfield fund, ff Asset Management, Lucid ventures, Quigo technologies, Paige Craig and others.

There’s always a risk of Twitter and Facebook devising their own popularity tracking services, which might be preferred by the users/ clients for obvious reasons. However, Klout now seems to clearly lead the pack with an established user base, a decent chunk of API partnerships and its newly integrated Facebook platform.

It remains to be seen if Klout will be able to influence its own self among the social media circles in the long run. Do you think the derivative services, primarily serving big players like twitter and Facebook fare well through the time? Or do they just add to the clutter in the already overcrowded web space? Share your opinions.
